About the reading...I thought using violence in the assembly to gain votes was a bit extreme on Gracchus's part. In the end his decision ended up backfiring and he was killed along with many of his followers (the Gracchans)
Also in the reading " Senate and Nobles in Charge" what do you think would happen if the government tried to get rid of the new cults? Would there have been a protest or overthrowing of the government out of anger? |

who knows mei? things like that can be hard to predict. people take their religion extremely seriously, and my guess is that they would have had at least a minor uprising and some riots if they tried to supress the new religion. as we have seen many time, the roman government is subtle and sneaky. it wouldnt be the senates style to crush something outright, they would try to cut off it's suport slowly (which they did.) we see this sly behavior again when the senate convinces gaius's friend to turn against him instead of trying to blatantly kill him, although they do do that later. |
