The smartphone is the BlackBerry London, and will be released in mid-to-late 2012

A photo of a smartphone has caused quite a stir in the tech community, as many believe it may be Research In Motion's next-generation touchscreen BlackBerry smartphone running the new BBX operating system.

The Verge got its hands on the first photo of what is believed to be the BlackBerry London. This smartphone, which is expected to be released mid-2012, is to offer the upcoming BBX operating system, which was announced at the fourth annual BlackBerry Developer Conference in October and is based on QNX.

The BlackBerry London allegedly features a 1.5 GHz Tl OMAP dual-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB storage capacity, a 2 MP front-facing camera and an 8 MP rear camera. According to The Verge, the London is the same size as a Galaxy S ll (though it was unclear which one) and is thinner than the iPhone 4.

The photo contains a "dummy" model of the phone, but a BGR source says the model in the picture is indeed real. The London has replaced the BlackBerry Colt, which was the first QNX-based RIM handset that was in-progress, but the Colt was terminated in favor of the London.
