I think that this chapter may have helped us clarify the idea of civilized a little bit, or atleast given us some more insight into the topic. I found it interesting that "civilization" killed the American Indians, I mean I had always known that to some extent, that the "civilized" people were the ones to kill the native americans, but it is everything else that comes with civilization that the American Indians were unprepared for. It was the disease, the lack of immunity that comes with living in close quarters with people and festering in one another's waster, that killed the Native Americans. And in this way we see that maybe the healthiest way to live is the "uncivilized" way.(I might think this simply because of the fact that I have not heard of really any pre-Columbus diseases) but, either way I think that there is something to be said for lack of traditional civilization.
It was also intersting to see some geneological(real word?) evidence that backed the disease hypothesis, not that I am really a big science or evidence sort of guy. What I am wondering is whether the bad things(could not think of a better word) that come with civilization are worth it for the title of "civilized"? or in uncivilized a good thing in certain circumstances? |
