Rodgers and his squadron sailed in pursuit, and on 23 June they encountered what was later learned to be HMS Belvidera.[58][60] President pursued the ship, and in what is recorded as the first shot of the War of 1812, Rodgers himself aimed and fired a bowchaser at Belvidera, striking her rudder and penetrating the gun room.[61][62] Upon President's fourth shot at Belvidera, a cannon one deck below Rodgers burst, killing or wounding 16 sailors and throwing Rodgers to the deck with enough force to break his leg.[63][64]
