I think the most significant issue in the US around the 1800s, was slavery. That was a topic nobody could agree on. It kept the South very divided from the North, which also effected the government and the decision making process. The country was split down the middle by the important issue of race.

Maddy I think you are mistaken. You said that "The country was split down the middle by the important issue of race." I dont believe the discrepency in the 1800 focused on race. During that time period race was not the issue, it was more about what you said prior to this statment, slavery was the most signifigant issue. Many southeners were dependent on slaves for their income. Many people in the south at the time couldnt thrive successfully without slave work to provide for their family. It went beyond the physical of how a person looks to determine their statuse to "How am I going to put food on my family's table?" When people are having five kids or just about any amount per family they will do what ever it takes to make sure that they will more than just survive on an income. Southeners felt as though they had to rely on slavery due to the economic competition in the North. The industry there at the time was at a constant expansion. Northeners went from producing products in their home to manufacturing goods at a constant level in factories, how can a Southener compete with that when no one with in a "reasonable" price wants to tend the largest growing crop, cotton, they cant do it by themselves. I guess the real issue is: If we were as united as we said we were, why didnt the North help the South keep up financialy?
