WRITE at least 2 questions about the reading to discuss in class – post them here on the class forum - feel free to also try to answer each other's questions... Good luck!

Hey!
Here are my two questions:
1) How much influence did the consuls have on the senate?
2) How were foreigners and not-native romans accounted for?

to answer your 2nd question ivy:

i dont know the rules when the reading we read was written, but i do know that the romans were fairly flexible when it came to citizenship. if you lived in a conquered country you could gain citizenship from serving in the army. one of the reasons the romans were so succesful as an empire was that they were able to keep the people they conquered happy by treating them well.

as for my own questions...

1. the reading referred to different classes of citizens based on monetary value. i think it mentioned first class citizens had 100,000 x. what was the x? sestertii?

2. when did they make it so that one consul was a pleb and the other a patrician?

In section 26 it lists various different roman positions of power. However near the end of the section on page 98 it briefly says, " The remaining officials, because they are inferior to these 'masters" Basically they mean everyone else thats not in a position of power...doesn't that kind of go back back to square one where there are a group of people(like the king's gov't) ruling over everyone else?

Also how come the tribunes of the plebs were not allowed to enter the senate house?

Hey guys,
I apologize for the delay.
1. What position of power did Brutus assume in the Roman government?
2. Could the praetors make significant changes to the consul's current regime? What balances of power determined the authority given to the praetors?

To answer your questions warren:
I believe Bruutus was just a founder of the senate, but I'm not completely sure. and the second question, if you look on the back of section 25, it says that Quaetors manage the finances, so they are like treasurers.

my questions are:
1: Why is the magistrate given significantly more power than the consul, but they are only appointed into the senate for 6 months.

2. Because of this, would the magistrates be at the same level as the consul, or would it be the consul...? Since the consul serves full time.

my questions are:
what exactly are the twelve tables that are spoken of in reading 25 when it says that after the passing of the twelve tables a contest arose?

why were the consuls given power over the senate? how was this decided upon and why?

Hi!! Sorry this is so late, I had to figure out how to register and SUCH. Err... SO! My questions:
1) At the beginning of section 25, it was saying how kings were expelled and replaced by two consuls. Why and when were the kings expelled, and how long did it take for them to decide on creating two consuls to replace them?
2) What are fasces?
Very Happy
