I thought the seminar was a great success, going around the room twice reviewing everybody's thoughts and ideas was fair and let everyone have a chance to voice their opinion on the greatest strengths and weaknesses.

One idea that was brought up most of the time was that of the division of the north and south. The most prominent idea that we discussed was that of the relationship between slaves and other slaves and how slaveowners kept theirs slaves at a constant state of hatred for between slaves, reducing the chances of a revolt. Another tactic was keeping the slaves in separate cabins and giving lighter skinned slaves better privileges.

Over all i really liked the seminar and can't wait for more of them
On a separate note, i love the forum idea, its great and very helpful.

Two ideas I gained from the seminar discussion:
1) It's individulism that separated the United States when the South and the North are actually relying on each other for economic benefit
2) Although division led to the Civil War and hurts but it also brought much more union to the country.

Two ideas about the seminar discussion itsself:
1) I favor the hand-up and speak-up form better because I feel like I could not talk as much as the people that have a lot to say. Sometimes I have just a few sentences to say and feel like if I talk without handing up the atmosphere will be destroyed... kinda sad
2)Should we have a smaller group discussion before? Maybe that will bring up better and more ideas?
But I think it was a good start on Friday, we still have a lot of chances to get to talk about history and affrais! Good job to everyone~Goodnight^^

"Who would reap the benefits of expansion?” said Chapter Two of WESTWARD EXPANSION, SECTIONAL STRIFE, AND CIVIL WAR. As both classrooms underwent a transformational shift in ideology, we begin seeing a volumnous classroom becoming a rather social communal entity. Although, I not speak of any member of our classroom representing the harvesting of crops from portioned land or engaging in any agricultural affair, I realize much of comprehensive thoughts generated by the majority precisely fell on one central idea; the notion of slavery. With that, came extensive jargon generated by individuals who reiterated a consistent argument. This created substantial deviation from the topic and I felt we never got to where we should have gone. Nonetheless, I valued every statement equally, and I commend all individuals who courageously spoke in front of the classroom, which is no easy task to accomplish. A system by which all individuals feel the "comfort" to speak during the Seminar Discussion would be the best possible solution for a better session.

Quote:
"Prioritizing individual and local interests over national issues was the greatest cause of division in America."

When saying this Eli, what would you define as a national issue. I'm not sure if any policy or idea can or could have been defined as a "national issue."

Lastly, Two Ideas I gained and hope to explore from the Discussion were:

I. The idea of Indiviualism within American and how it diferentiated from the North and South.

II. Religious Impact on Westward Expansion.

Night Y'all.

As I looked forward to seeing, a lot of brilliant ideas that I wouldn’t think was popped up. The one of ideas was an individualism that was obviously shown in the slavery issue. Basically, the white men in the north who were willing to fight against the slavery in the south kept their own slaves to work. As Jessica mentioned, they were hypocritical. From the reading that I had long long time ago, the white men in the north tried to keep the west from being plantation lands by southern men. The other idea was religious impact on westward expansion. I couldn’t connect the expansion to the religions, but now I got an idea through the discussion.

I saw how potential this seminar is. As our goals, broad range of ideas made by individuals impressed each other. Also the discussion smoothly flowed. I think we better not be just satisfied with the seminar that I had on last Friday. We should try to make better one by raising more voices by each of us. I will participate more. I feel that I don’t seem to contribute something impressive to the seminar at the last time. I had something going on my head at that time.
