The black soldiers were paid less, and had to endure harsher environments, but they were doing so because they thought that they were promised freedom and equality after the war was over and all the racism would magically disappear.
And I'm pretty sure there were black solders on both sides... but don't quote me on it.
Black soldiers and white solders were paid differently because of prejudice. "oh they've worked for free, they we can give them less then what we give everyone else.. hey they get something!" would be something that crossed their mind.
