Study Guide:
• The foundation myth: Aneas, Antenor, Amulus, Latinus, Rhea Silvia, Numitor, Romulus, and Remus; symbolism, the virtus represented.
• Government: The major roles (consuls, praetor, senate, etc); the responsibilities and powers; who has power over who.
• The Twelve Tables: the significance of writing down the laws, where they were displayed, and examples of laws form the tables.
• Labeling significant places on the maps
• What differentiates a patrician from a plebian?
Sample Identifications:
• The Twelve Tables: Date- 462 in the Roman Republic; Description: A written down set of rules for the Romans; Significance: it was the first “voted on” piece of legislature in Rome, granted women a bit more freedom, and was the first set of written down laws the Romans had to obey.
• Romulus and Remus: Date- before the foundation of Rome, after the fall of troy; Description- the twin brothers that, in the roman foundation myth, battled for the right to chose the location of their future city, Romulus killed his brother; Significance: the brother’s embodied many of the roman virtus, such as masculinity, aggressiveness, and strength. Also, the act of killing one’s brother is exemplified as necessary, showing that blood should not get in the way of glory. |
