I believe my team did ok, but we could have been more prepared. I wish our opening statement had been longer. However, I feel we regained our ground in the open rebuttle.
I think the best argument our team made was about how Pompey fulfilled his duty as a roman by marrying. (This was somewhat masking his seemingly "soft" nature.) I think the worst argument we made was that we should go out and attack our enemies; this sounded paranoid and put little faith in our strong reputation by assuming other countries will attack us.
I think the strongest argument the Sulla team made was that "the ends justify the means." Using that idiom, they could therefore say that even if Sulla was ruthless, he cared about Rome. I think they could have pushed the "killer" virtue a bit farther.
I think the most compelling argument the marius team made was in their closing statement, when they appealed to our virtus. Values are undeniable, and easily win people over. However, I don't remember many of their arguments; they didn't leave a huge impression on me. perhaps they could have focused on their own man more than attacking others.
I think the strongest argument our team could make is definitely the “You can’t argue with results” idea. It effectively counters the other team’s arguments about how Sulla was a tyrant and killed indiscriminately, while simultaneously playing to the idea of Roman virtus. It didn’t seem to me as if there were any potential arguments that we didn’t pick up on; Sulla is all about power, and we presented that as effectively as possible. I really liked the idea that Team Marius attacked the Pompey team with, that occupying a single consulship was unjust, until Rachel shot it down. I thought it would have been a very effective argument if it were actually true. I thought the Pompey team also could have come up with a counterargument for the fact that Pompey was “cowering in fear” in the countryside with his wife. I thought the debate as a whole was pretty good; I liked the diversity of the topics, and the entire “indirect attack” method forced us to utilize our ability to ask questions; however I still think that we should use more evidence to support our arguments, as that always renders them more effective.
Hi Ivy, Iv'e noticed that you tend to post a new topic on the forum for topics that have already been created. Instead of creating a new topic, hit " post reply" instead. That way everyone's responses on a specific topic are all in one place. Thanks!
1. The strongest argument our team made was that Marius made a lot of good improvements to Rome’s military and that he also had a lot military experience. The best argument our team didn’t make was that Marius was greatly supported by the populares, which made him partial to doing what the people of Rome wanted.
2. The most compelling arguments the other teams made were that Pomey was a great military man and that for Sulla that ‘the ends justify the means.’ The great argument the other teams didn’t make was that Marius was really old and therefore not really fit for office.
3. Having a three-way debate made the arguments a lot more interesting, but it also caused teams to gang up on each other. Also, having only open debate meant that ideas were a lot more free flowing and responded to much more quickly. However, it would have been better if teams could work together or have a chance to regroup during the open rebuttal.
Jack Wilshere England display impresses Fabio Capello
Wilshere (centre) had a solid first half before he was withdrawn at the break
England boss Fabio Capello praised Jack Wilshere after the youngster's full debut in the 2-1 win in Denmark.
Arsenal's Wilshere, 19, partnered Frank Lampard in midfield for the first half of the friendly before being taken off at the interval with the score at 1-1.
"He played very well. He played with confidence, passed a lot of good balls and won back possession," Capello said.
"It's not easy for a player so young on a [full] debut to play at this level. It was a good performance."
Wilshere, making his first start for England, said on Thursday that he would "treasure [the match shirt] forever".
Liverpool defender Daniel Agger scored an early opener for the Danes prior to Aston Villa's Darren Bent levelling proceedings with a simple tap-in for the equaliser.
Ashley Young replaced Manchester United's Wayne Rooney for the second half and scored England's winner, playing in the hole behind the striker and club-mate Bent.
"He [Young] played in the same position as he does with Aston Villa. He played with confidence in this position because he is free," Capello added.
"All the players did well. It is not easy to play here and win."
Capello was relieved after the game that none of the players sustained any injuries, with a full Premier League programme this weekend and the Champions League resuming next week.

Jack Wilshere can take much from his own performance, showing confidence and a full range of passing, despite playing a role unsuited to his progressive box-to-box approach
"No-one is injured and that is important for the clubs," the Italian commented. "I'm happy for the performance of the players. The players worked really hard and with team spirit, which is really important."
Wilshere, who was overlooked for the November defeat against France, said he would cherish his first national start
"It was just good to be out there," the teenager stated. "To play with the players who were on show was just brilliant. I'm delighted and it's good to get off to a winning start on my debut.
"Obviously, it is a big game for your country but I think the main thing was for me to go out and play my game. Hopefully, I showed that.
"I was a little bit nervous before the game but the lads were great. I'm delighted with my performance.
"I knew I would only play 45 minutes. It was a great experience and hopefully I can get more. At half-time I was desperate to get out but the boss said 'you have got some big games coming up for your club'.
"Playing with Rooney and Lampard was great and I'm going to treasure that forever."
Bent was delighted to follow up his first goal for his country against Switzerland in the Euro 2012 qualifier in September with the equaliser in Copenhagen and hoped it would lead to a regular spot in Capello's future teams.

Lampard happy to return to winning ways
"I was happy to get 90 minutes. Fabio felt it was right to start me and I managed to get a goal and was happy with the performance," reflected Bent, who celebrated his 27th birthday on Sunday.
"My club form has been good and, since I've gone to Aston Villa, everything has gone right. I can put a marker down in terms of a regular place but there are a lot of good English striker around.
"It was only a couple of games ago that Jermain Defoe got a hat-trick [against Bulgaria] so there is big competition. But, as long as I can keep going, keep my club form up and keep trying to put in performances when I'm picked for England, then anything is possible."
Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, but did we hold a conversation about the Aeneid? I've finished the assigned reading and I'll read this but currently I'm unable to answer the questions.
