Harper's Ferry
WHAT HAPPENED?
It was a raid to the Harper's Ferry happened on October 16th, 1859. It led by the slavery abolitionist John Brown and his 21 followers. First, they captured the federal armory and arsenal. Then, they captured Hall's Rifle Works, a supplier of the weapons to the government. And they rounded up 60 prominent citizens of the town and held them as hostages, intend that their slaves would join the flight. But no slaves came forth.
The local militia pinned Brown and his men down. In the end, ten of Brown's men were killed, seven were captured, and five had escaped.
This is what happened, and I'll continue later!! |

What I just posted was John Brown and Harper's Ferry.
Adding to that, John Brown was also the one who led the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas. The raid in Harpers Ferry was happened after. The result of the raid in Harpers Ferry was hastened the advent of the civil war, because which inspiring many people who had the same mind that toward the slavery.
This one is Battle of Harpers Ferry.
The Battle of Harpers Ferry was fought September 12–15, 1862, as part of the major turning points of the American civil war. Harpers Ferry is noteworthy for the role it played in preparing the South for its next major battle—the Battle of Antietam.
And below is the history of Harper's Ferry
- was the starting place of the Lewis and Clarke expedition.
- was the industrial town where using interchangeable parts in a manufacturing process was first invented and proven practical.
- was the site of the John Brown raid which precipitated the Civil War.
- was the site of three Civil War battles, the major one involving over 30,000 troops on both sides which resulted in the largest surrender of US troops until Bataan in WWII.
- was a bastion of elevating African Americans, with the first real academic college (Storer College) to educate freed slaves in all aspects of higher learning, rather than sewing and other trades.
If there is any question or confussion, let me know. |

The overall story is; Plantation owner Author Shelby bankrupted, and sold two slaves of his. One of the slaves is Uncle Tom. By separated from his wife and children, he suffers physical torment, and insult.
One day, he helped his fellow slaves' flight. The owner threated Tom to tell the truth, but Tom resisted. Finally, he dies. After Tom's death, Shelby's son brought money to free Tom, but he realizes that Tom sacrificed himself to free other slaves. After coming back to his home, he freed all of his slaves.
Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, was daughter of Priest(He must be Pastor, not the Priest..). With her father, she moved to Cincinnati in young age, and saw cruel reality of slavery; the whole slave family got separated and sold as commodity, even new born babies. After Fugitive Slave Act was legitimated in 1850, she decided to help slaves, and started to collect further information about them. In March 20 of 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom's Cabin.
To this book, Southerners showed high repugnance. They even published pro-slavery literatures, which are anti-Tom literature. In those books, slave owners were described as lenient and attentive people, while slaves were described as foolish and stupid creatures. The most popular book was 'The Planter's Northern Bride' by Caroline Lee Hentz.
On the other hand, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' took a big hit in North, and became best-selling novel of 19th century. Stowe claimed that Slave owners should be forgiven, while Slavery itself must be abolished, giving a huge influence to Abolitionist Movement.

I'm struggling with politicals issues and it's impact on Uncle Tom's Cabin. Although the book is soley concentrated on politcal ideology, I'm having trouble collecting my thoughts of issues directly pertaining to the book. For now I'll continue my research, but if any trouble arises while during the research, I will post.
This is what I have for now as somewhat of a thesis for politcals issues and Uncle Tom's Cabin:
Through Abolitionism, the portryal of slavery within Uncles Tom's Cabin gave insite to an arising tempered society on the treatment of slaves thus putting stress on the Politcal Powers at be.
Again, I'll be working on it. |

I suggest looking at Political People/Political Leaders. That will tie things in because it will say what they did and why.... leading to cause and effect of events.
I am typing up the timeline now. I did a bunch of research from beginning to end of the leading causes. I will post my work after i am done.
How is everyone else doing? |

Republican Message → Abolishing Slavery
Tension between the states legislatures Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida resolved in case of republican victory in Presidential election would both result in and provide justification for succession.
The Republican Party was a new phenomenon on the American political scene: a purely regional political party.
Harriet Beacher Stowe was the American Novelist and Abolitionist whose novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin fanned antislavery sentiment in the north.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin drew attention to the fugitive slave law and its provisions for individuals caught helping runaway slaves.
Free-Soiler and Anti Slavery Whigs having resentment for the Democratic Party, struggled even more when anti slavery coalitions lost support of the party.
John Brown Seized the U.S. Arsenal along with 21 followers that included 4 free black men in Harpers Ferry Virginia. With the overall goal as having blacks overthrowing their slave owners, he came east from Kansas to convince the rising and prominent antislavery leaders to fight against slave owners. Although successfully, seizing arsenal, he was surrounded by troops under command by Colonel Robert E. Lee. He was quickly tried, convicted of treason, and hanged on December 2, 1859.
Colonel Robert E. Lee was the Commanding Officer of the surrender of John Brown’s raid. |
