Nat Turner was a slave who claimed that he had a "vision from God" to revolt. He led a few slaves to join him. 60 whites died. 100+ African Americans died.
Yet, the text says two pages later that during the SAME time period; rebellion escalated into barn-burnings or the poisoning of a master. Implying that those rebells were the "worst".
In church they preached the Old Testament, where ".... oppressed escaping their tormentors...." So did all whites betray God by enslaving and discriminating the blacks?
Harriet Tubman made 19 trips to the South and freed over 300 slaves. Just think of the numbers for one person to control.
"Many white northerners despised slavery AND black people alike, seeing both as threats to the livelihood of white workingmen." --Quote from text
"Some white antislavery reformers opposed racial discrimination hundreds of miles away in the slave South, but turned a blind eye to discrimination and exploration of free blacks on their own doorstep." ----- This was in the 1830's it is now 2010, do we still do this? (my answer is most definitely)
QUESTIONS:
How did they get the Gag Rule to pass?
The text says that 59000 African Americans were free by 1790: 27000 in the North and 32000 in the South. Why is that when the North was more antislavery? |
